Twenty-Five
There was something very James Bond about the way Harlan made quick work of removing the hard drive, a rectangular sliver of the box housed beneath a 24-inch flat-screen monitor.
He held it into view. âShouldnât take too long.â
Down the hall came the click-click of heels.
âExpecting anyone?â he asked.
Della appeared in the doorway. Her mere presence charged the air with scrutiny. âSaw Larkâs car outside and assumed you were accepting company. The front door was open.â She pushed her silky hair back, her eyes scouring every square inch of that office.
Did you put a tracking device on Larkâs car to notify you if it came within twenty yards of my house, Della? âThis is Larkâs brother, Harlan,â I said. âHeâs visiting from Colorado.â
He stood to offer his hand.
âDella Betancourt.â She gave his hand a solid shake and stared as he returned to the computerâs keyboard.
âHeâs helping me with a computer problem,â I said.
âAll you had to do was ask, Sis. Jaredâs a computer guru.â
âGot everything I need,â Harlan said. âIâll call when I . . . when itâs . . . fixed. Nice meeting you. Iâll let myself out.â He flashed a quick smile and disappeared.
Della was still gawking at the computer when my phone rang and Crashman appeared on the screen.
âNeed to get that?â she asked.
I shook my head and punched a button on the side of my phone, sending the call to voicemail.
âWhatâs wrong with your computer?â
âCanât access our old email account,â I said. âWho knows what bills are coming due?â
âHowâd he get involved?â she asked.
âHe brought cinnamon rollsâwant one?â
âEech. All those carbs.â
âWhat do you have against carbs?â
âSince Josie destroyed my metabolism.â She moved to the windows and peered out as Harlan pulled away.
I moved toward the door. âWhat brought you to my end of town?â
She followed me. âMeeting with the owners of that ginormous house on Quaker. I think Iâm getting the listing.â She sighed. âHad a few minutes to check in on you.â
After a spell of bland small talk, she left for her meeting. She seemed a little woundedâbut Iâd survived our encounter with my self-respect intact.
